Upper East Side Residence

Kitchen dining nook

With a new chapter beginning in their lives, these longtime clients called Lucy with a request to renovate their Upper East Side townhome. The couple had recently become empty nesters and travel much of the time, so this house would be home base between work trips and when the kids were back from school.

Our approach was to first rediscover the client's needs and see what had changed or stayed the same. Then we stepped back and decided which furniture pieces should remain, be refinished or be replaced. Lastly, we looked at color palette and the architectural finishes that would refresh all six floors.

The architect oversaw renovating the kitchen and bathrooms with us collaborating on color, finishes and wallpaper selection. The client was hesitant at first about big changes, and ultimately moved from a light, neutral color palette to a high-contrast palette infused with darker tones and geometric patterns. In the living room, we reupholstered the sectional with a plush mohair and focused on making spaces cozy and conversational for family time. We designed a private study for her to receive in-home wellness treatments and reimagined the playroom as a hang-out space for the kids who are now adults. For the ground-floor kitchen, we integrated rich tones and materials that effuse warmth under glowy pendant lighting and paired modern furniture with vintage objects for an eclectic mix.
